ACT 1

A MAN GOES THROUGH A WHOLE GAMUT OF FEELINGS – FROM JOY TO

SHOCK TO SADNESS AND FINALLY TO HOPELESSNESS!

Michael enters the living room, dialling on his phone. He

looks like a man who just won a lottery.

MICHAEL

(into phone)

Jide? Guess what? / I’m home! /

Sarah took me back without a fuss.

/ And last night was like the old

days. / I won’t be surprised if

she’s pregnant already? / i’m home

alone. She must have taken the kids

to school. / Yeah. / Sure. / You

can come by later.

Then he sights an envelope on the table. His mood drops,

perturbed by the content he is yet to see. Slowly, he opens

it and begins to read.

SARAH (V.O.)

By the time you read this, me and

the kids are gone! I gave you my

life, and you turned my dreams –

our dreams – into nightmares. And

for a long time, I thought my life

was over. But the kids gave me

hope. I reached rock bottom, but it

was all I needed to spring forth

with vigour. Now, I believe. I can

live again. And where you made me

feel weak, I realise how

unbelievably strong I am. Thank

you, Michael. You helped me reach

my epiphany!

ACT 2

HATRED – A SERIAL RAPIST FINALLY CONFRONTS THE WOMAN HE

BLAMES FOR EVERYTHING

STEPHEN

When you left, you took all of me

with you. I crashed to the

bottom…I hated you! For leaving

me! For killing me!

(then, softly)

I needed an escape. So, one day, I

was at the airport when I overheard

a girl on the phone telling her

boyfriend off, rudely, because she

was going to the UK for a seminar.

Something snapped inside of me that

day.

(sinisterly)

So, I followed her home. I robbed

her and raped her till the next

morning! It felt good! There was

this release. Like a purge. I

became hollow and with it came a

hunger with greater ferocity. I

went on a raping spree. I did it

ten, twenty times. But who is

counting? It was your fault. You

made me happy, then you crushed my

heart and made me a monster. Today

is the day you die. Consider it a

great compliment to be devoured by

your own creation!

(cocks the gun)

Get on your knees!

ACT 3

LOVE – A TOUGH, BRUTAL MAN HAS HIS WORLD TURNED INSIDE OUT

KALIFA

I never knew love. To me, love was

a fantasy written into songs to

melt our hearts and float our

emotions through the clouds of

stupidity. I was ready to go

through life with that conviction.

Until you day you came into my life

and opened a whole new world of

possibilities to me. Now, I can

hear the lyrics in the song of

birds, the rhythm in the howl of

the wind, and the notes in the clap

of thunder! Even if you break my

heart, I will survive because your

love has gifted me with so much

vigour that I can go on loving for

a million years and not grow weary!

This love will live on beyond time!

ACT 1

ANGER – A MOTHER CONFRONTS THE LYING GIRLFRIEND OF HIS ONLY

SON.

DR.ESE BRAIDE

My son is not a saint by a long

shot – but he was a decent boy,

until you seduced him, while

carrying another man’s child! How

do you explain that? You are a

malfeasance masquerading as

decency. You’ve been found out!

(then)

If I ever see you near my son

again, you’d curse the day you were

born!

ACT 2

ANGER – AN ANGRY WOMAN CONFRONTS HER OVERBEARING MOTHER-IN-LAW

RACHAEL

You know what would make me even

happier? If you didn’t come. I can

handle my own daughter’s wedding

myself…I am a good mother! And I

have brought my daughters up

well…You make it so easy to

dislike you. You come in here with

this air of authority and

perfection. You criticise and

condemn everything: my clothes, my

children, and my house. Everything!

I have had it! No more!

ACT 3

HOPE AND JOY – A WISE MOTHER SPEAKS AT HER DAUGHTER’S WEDDING

RHODA

Weddings! I love them. The coming

together of one alien Adam and an

enigmatic Eve, pitching a common

tent in an exotic Eden. The garden

need not be tended. It takes care

of itself. Oh, and the promises…

Grand pretensions or die-hard

assurances? No matter the sincerity

at the moment of declaration,

promises are meant to be broken.

And when they are, lives are

shattered. Forever! But today, let

them bask in the bliss of this

paradise. For tomorrow brings

harsher realities, and the memory

of today may represent the only

cheer in their protracted miserable

co-existence!
